The Provincial FOCUS Project

The FOCUS Program is an initiative of the Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Branch of the Ministry of Health Promotion. The goal of the FOCUS Program is to prevent problems, including injuries, associated with alcohol and other drug abuse.

A member of Ontario's FOCUS Program: Community partners in alcohol and other drug abuse prevention.

Guiding Principle

We believe that through education, skill building and by providing healthy, alternative activities, that the use of alcohol and other drugs will be reduced, as will the harm and injuries related to their misuse.

Purpose

To improve the health of the Ogden-East End community by providing an integrated prevention project that reduces the health, social and legal problems, including injuries, associated with alcohol and drug abuse.

Project Goals

Foster a strong community to take action to prevent alcohol and substance abuse.

Increase the capacity of community, youth, families and seniors to engage in health enhancement, risk avoidance and risk reduction practices.

Reduce the harm and injury associated with behavior related to alcohol and drug abuse such as: accidents, violence, family violence and failure to fulfill family, work and social roles.

Address the socio-cultural context of alcohol and substance abuse in our community to change prevalent attitudes and norms regarding the appropriateness, type, amount and circumstances of alcohol and substance consumption.

Develop and implement effective, multidimensional initiatives that use a combination of approaches including education, policy and environmental support.

Work with broad-based community partnerships to strengthen, integrate and expand effective interventions.
