Programs Offered
Seniors Lunch
A luncheon is served and a monthly calendar of activities
are distributed. Offered every second month at the Longlac
site.
Seniors Exercise
One hour weekly exercise, active living program including
warm up, stretches, aerobic and muscle strengthening.
Chateau Lac
Community Kitchen
Seniors cook a meal together two times a month. Basic shelf
items are provided free of charge.

An active chair exercise program for a safe and enjoyable
physical activity for seniors..
Living with
Diabetes
Monthly educational Diabetes Support Group for managing
diabetes, exercise, healthy recipe demonstrations and blood
sugars can be measured.
Flu Clinic
Annual flu and pneumonia shots are provided for all. Offered
every fall.
Breast Screening
Mobile Coach
The Coach comes on site, and provides mammograms and breast
exams. Offered twice a year.
Senior Community
Kitchen
Seniors cook several meals together to bring home on a
monthly basis. Basic shelf items are provided free of
charge. Offered monthly.
Blood Pressure
Clinics
Weekly walk in blood pressure clinics at the Longlac site.
Once a month blood pressure clinic at the Seniors drop-in
centre.
Walking Club
A walking program for anyone, particularly seniors. Offered
spring and summer.
Playgroup
Parents and children socialize and play together. Includes
free play, crafts, snacks, stories, songs, specials themes
and guests. Held Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Longlac site.
Parenting Program
Sessions focus on parenting issues, and feature discussions,
presentations, videos, and occasional guest speakers.
Childcare, parenting resources are provided. Offered in 6
weekly sessions once or twice a year in Longlac.
School's Cool
School's Cool is a school-readiness program for 3 to 4 year
olds who will be attending school in September. The program
runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and afternoons
throughout the months of May and June. The focus is on
skills needed to succeed at school such as self-help and
social, pre-reading and writing.
Siblings Without
Rivalry
Siblings Without Rivalry is a program for parents of
Children aged 4-12 years. It is designed to help parents
help their children to learn to live together peacefully. A
series of eight workshops are offered once a year.
Volcano in my
Tummy
A Volcano in my Tummy is an anger management program for
school-aged children that is designed to teach children to
recognize anger signs and triggers as well as skills to cope
with these feelings. The program is 8 sessions in length and
runs once a year or more according to demand.
Fairstart
Screening
Fairstart Screening is offered at the Longlac site three
times per year and is open to all children aged 18 months to
3 years. During this screening the child's hearing is tested
and a developmental screening is done.
Kids Have Stress
Too
Program for parents of school-aged children to help them to
recognize the signs and symptoms of their child's stress and
then acquire tools to use to help their children. There are
three sessions included in this program and they are offered
in the evening in the spring. Kids Have Stress Too has been
adapted and used as a classroom presentation to teach the
Grade One children at all of our local schools to recognize
the signs of stress and to teach them some practical
exercises to reduce stress. These presentations are made in
the spring.
Speech Language
Screening
A speech and language pathologist from the Thunder Bay
District Health Unit visits the centre to provide scheduled
appointments. Offered several times a year in addition to
the Fair Start preschool screening program at the Longlac
site.
Baby Food Making
A workshop to show new mothers how to make nutritious baby
food at low cost. Offered when requested at the Longlac
site.
Daycare
Exercise/Health Education
Fun, games and exercise to introduce preschool & JK/SK
children to concepts of 'Active Living'. Offered weekly at
the local daycare in Longlac. Health Education offered the
last two Mondays of the month.
Healthy Eating
An 8-week program introducing healthy eating concepts.
Includes preparing a healthy meal together and a grocery
store tour. Offered once a year in Longlac. There is also a
monthly workshop on Health Eating.
Kids Food Fun
A two-week summer program for children. Includes games,
activities and snacks. The sessions are offered twice over
the summer at the Longlac site.
Fruitables Plus
A school program to introduce fruits and vegetables, while
providing nutrition education. Provided to 415 students
twice a month in Longlac.
Community
Kitchens
Individuals cook several meals together for their families
and contribute toward the cost of the food. Offered monthly
in Longlac.
Community Gardens
Community garden in Longlac to promote the interaction
amongst residents, to reduce the isolation of seniors, to
share gardening skills, and grow healthy food.
Roots of Empathy
A classroom program where a parent and baby visit monthly.
The program teaches human development and nurtures the
growth of empathy. Offered in selected grade schools in the
Longlac area.
Babysitting
Training Course
A six-week program for 12 year olds to develop skills in
first aid, handling emergencies, safety, child development,
nutrition, play, etc.
Home Alone
A program for parents & children 10 yrs. & up to educate on
children/parent responsibilities & safety issues. Offered
once or twice a year at the Longlac site.
Health Cards
The Ministry of Health visits the centre to update or
replace photo health cards. 3 pieces of ID are required. The
Longlac Community Health Worker available to assist.
Mental Health and
Health Education Workshops
Workshops on anxiety, depression, money management, stress
management, anger management, etc. according to community
needs. Offered several times per year at the Longlac site.
